Silver Age talk

THE SILVER AGE OF COMIC BOOK ART Gallery talk at Art on A Gallery in NYC Thursday 6/5/2014 at 6pm EST!

Based on my comic book art history book—currently out of print, but due to be republished this summer in both revised hardcover and digital/e-book editions—I explore the origins of the superhero traditions and their personification of American ideals and values, and how these attitudes and portrayals changed during the turbulent decade of the 1960s. You'll not only see where Hollywood's love affair with superhero movies comes from—you'll "see" comics like you've never seen them before!

"There's a song by some dude with a line about learning 'more from a three-minute record than we ever learned in school.' Well, this tour de force has just got to be the comic book art equivalent of that sentiment. Arlen manages the feat of tying up all the different strands of the Silver Age into a beautiful, cohesive whole in a scholarly and never less than entertaining style where his passion for the subject shines through and is nothing short of contagious. As soon as the incense had cleared I was left smiling and feeling absolutely vindicated that my stubborn but heartfelt enthusiasm for comics since an early age now made perfect sense. A must see." —Ferdinando Fontana, June 7, 2014

BATMAN, BOB KANE & BILL FINGER Gallery Talk

Bill Finger Talk

"BATMAN, BOB KANE & BILL FINGER" gallery talk Thursday May 15, 2014, 6:00 pm EST, Art on A Gallery, 24 Avenue A NYC—and LIVE-STREAMED video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKHpUPhxrpc!

On the occasion of the 75th Anniversary of Batman's first published appearance in May 1939, I discuss the behind-the-scenes origin of the character, with specific attention paid to the unsung co-creator role of Kane's writer and partner, Bill Finger. This logo image is based on Kane's first "Bat-Man" sketch that he showed to Finger before Finger made all the suggestions that "...made Batman, Batman"!
